Dropping off your child at school and saying a little prayer, checking for the exit in a crowded movie theater, and watching yet another mass shooting unfold on national television… these are not normal experiences. Under the Biden-Harris administration, Democrats passed the most comprehensive gun safety legislation in decades, but it didn’t go far enough. If elected, Texas Democrats would pass gun safety legislation that would create a safer state and save innocent lives.
Ending the Gun Lobby’s Influence: Did you know that 71% of Americans–including a majority of Republican voters–want stricter gun safety laws? Despite bipartisan support for gun reform, Republican politicians continue to bow to gun lobbies who have donated as much as $50 million to Republican politicians, resulting in extremist GOP positions like arming public school teachers with weapons and allowing college students to open carry on campuses.
Protecting Lives While Respecting Rights: Democrats support our Second Amendment Rights, but believe that common sense gun safety laws like prohibiting domestic abusers from possessing firearms and mandating gun licenses can respect those rights without compromising our safety.
Preventable Tragedies: There were 656 mass shootings in 2023. How many did you hear about? Democrats reject a reality where we have accepted mass shootings as commonplace and believe that assault weapons are designed for the battlefield, not for our neighborhoods. By putting in place common sense gun safety measures like universal background checks and red flag laws, we can end these preventable tragedies and create stronger, safer communities.
